Ninh Binh, located about 90 kilometers from Hanoi,is famous for Tam Coc, called “Ha Long Bay on the land” for its system of limestone grottoes and historical relics. This land is also known by other sites as Trang An Grottoes, Bich Dong Pagoda, Thung Nham -the valley of bird, Hoa Lu – ancient capital of Vietnam.
Tam Cocmeans “three caves”, includesHang Ca(first cave), Hang Hai (second cave)and Hang Ba (third cave). All of them were created by NgoDong River piercing through the mountain. This area is somewhat similar to Halong Bay (it is well-known as "Halong Bay on Land"), but more accessible.
Tam Coc is the first boat trip route that has beenoperatedin Tam Coc - Bich Dong. Hang Ca is 127m long and its entrance is over 20m wide.
The climate inside is cool and there are many stalactites here. The most attractive thingof Tam Coc is when the boat ridesamong the cliffs of the river and through 3 tunnels created by the river through the mountains. You will realize that: this is one of the most spectacular sights in Vietnam.
Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dongmeans "green grotto",located 2 km from Tam Coc wharf, is named by the Deputy Minister Nguyen Nghiem, the father of the greatpoet Nguyen Du (one of the Vietnam greatest poets in 1773. In front of the cave, there is a branch of the Ngo Dong rivermeandering through the flank and across the river, you will see a rice field. Bich Dong pagodais an interesting 15th century pagoda, including 3 temples: Ha, Trung and Thuong that were named base on their position in the moutain, some of them were built inside the caves.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Being ancient capital of Vietnam until 1010, this royal city is 15 km from Ninh Binh and Tam Coc. Hoa Lu Ancient Town is an important national relic complex and one of the four core areas of the World Heritage Complex in Trang An.
